Calvary Centre was established back in the year 1974 by Rev. Vernon H. Perera. With humble beginnings of just a handful of people, today the church has over 3000 believers. Over the past 35 years there have been over 100 members have come into full time ministry, while we have witnessed 1000’s of lives been transformed both locally and internationally. To this date Calvary Centre has planted 25 branch churches around the Island; our goal being to plant 100 churches in our country.
The Church has been active in bringing about a positive impact in the city, through its spiritual guidance and physical work. Throughout the years the Church has blessed the people and being among them through times of celebration and grief. The Church has always believed in looking out for the well-being of others and being a blessing to them as the need arises. This gave birth to the Child Care Programme. In the year 1978 we began feeding 6 needy children from the families in the area; soon this became 25 children that we provided breakfast and lunch. As the years went on with the need this ministry also grew, and thus we moved out of the feeding program to helping families with providing food. Today we support over 180 children and families. fore more information view "Child Sponsorship Program".
We believe that the word of God has the power to transform lives; thus we provide Christian Education classes for all age groups from young to old, based on the levels of spiritual maturity of the individuals. The church runs ‘Care Cells’; small groups that meet on a weekly basis to study the word of God, pray and fellowship with one another.
The Church conducts a wide verity of Ministries, for Children, Teens, Youth and Adults. More information on these is available under the “ministry” section.
Over the last 35 years seeing the growth of the congregation, it was eminent that we would have to extend or rebuild our current facilities, since our main Auditorium could seat only a maximum of 1100. Thus in 2002 the church set out to build a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of 6500 and facilities for a school. The School will be a blessing for children in our congregation as well as those in and around our area.
If you live around the Ja Ela area or visiting friends or relatives close by we warmly invite you to come worship with us. Our Sunday morning services are conducted individually in Sinhala, Tamil & English languages.
